Fictional Fashion Icon: Chuck from Pushing Daisies

Lately I've been streaming episodes of Pushing Daisies on netflix. It's one of my all-time favorite shows. I remember being blown away by it when it first came out and being disappointed when it was canceled after only two seasons. As I'm re-watching, I'm reminded of what a huge inspiration the costumes of the character Chuck are. She wears these incredible brightly colored whimsical little numbers all the time, the kind of outfits you can't put on without feeling happier.

Her style is definitely influenced by the '50s and early '60s, both in its silhouettes (fitted top with full skirt or tailored shift) and in Chuck's affinity for being matchy-matchy. These days, we don't change to a green handbag whenever we wear green shoes, but there was a day when women did. While, I'm glad that it's not necessary to follow that rule anymore, there is a kind of cuteness to the way Chuck does it.

The other thing about Chuck's style is that she loves bright colors and florals. You won't catch her in black, gray, or beige, but turquoise, magenta, and lemon yellow are frequent players.

Finally, I love how whimsical her style is. If she's undercover at a honey factory, she's wearing a dress with a honeycomb pattern on it. That's just the kind of girl she is.

Observe:

If you'd like to start incorporating some elements from Chuck's style into your own wardrobe, I can't recommend vintage shopping enough. But, there are also a lot of great vintage-inspired clothes out there. Here are some Chuck-worthy pieces from Modcloth. Click any image for a link to the listing on their website.

These skirts would look lovely with a tight little sweater.

These dresses are all definitely Chuck approved.

And don't forget some vintagey, whimsical accessories.

I could see chuck wearing this if she were working undercover at a natural history museum.
